Creating a Dark & Moody Interior

Creating a dark & moody interior goes further than just painting your walls dark. To avoid a flat feeling in your space there needs to be a layering of dark textures to create the right effect. Think of rich velvets, matte and gloss paints, mixed dark metals and even textured wall finishes like a lime wash paint. Here are some great inspiration images to get started.

DID YOU KNOW?

Frank Lloyd Wright purposely created the entrances to some of his homes as smaller, darker spaces. This would exaggerate the size and lightness of the adjacent spaces in the home and create a more dramatic sense of space when entering the home.

Our Top 3 Tips for Creating a Dark & Moody Interior

  • Start by selecting a dark base with blue, green or even purple undertones as the main colour for your room. Our favourites include; Sherwin Williams Mount Etna SW 7625, Benjamin Moore Abyss 2128-20, Sherwin Williams Darkroom 7083.

  • In order to keep your room from appearing flat, you have to layer in different textures. Use a matte paint on the walls and add panel details in a semi-gloss finish, or use a textured wall paint like a lime wash. Layer in furniture and accessories that have the same dark base, but with various textures like a stained wood, black metals and rich velvet upholstery.

  • Whether your room gets a lot of natural light or you create light by adding fixtures this is key to adding balance to your dark space. Use table and floors lamps or even wall-mounted sconces to add in the right level of light and balance the dark.
